Informal Sector Workers to Get NIS Benefits

As the government pushes to regularize informal sector workers,  Jamaica’s household helpers and fisherfolk will now be able to secure pension benefits through the National Insurance Scheme (NIS).

This will be greatly aided by the Transition to Formality Action Plan, which will allow this group of  laborers to obtain health and life insurance, pensions, and other benefits that will provide them with security and protection in the workplace.

The Action Plan, which was officially launched in November by Hon. Karl Samuda, Minister of Labour and Social Security, is in line with the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) recommendation to Member States to standardize informal sectors.
