Netball is the number one women’s sport in Jamaica and the number one team sport on the island, based on World Rankings and recent history and the majority of the schools in Jamaica participate.
Netball was first introduced to Jamaica by English women who came to teach in girls’ secondary schools.
The sport officially became part of the physical education programme in 1909.
The Jamaican National Netball team is popularly known as the Sunshine Girls.
Today on ZIP- trest we talk with Sunshine Girl Latanya Wilson about how she felt being selected for the 2023 Sunshine Girls squad. She has been selected as part of the Sunshine Girls squad every year since 2019.
Latanya spoke about how being a part of the Adelaide Thunderbirds in Australia has helped her improve her skills.
Wilson has been described as “one of the most dangerous defenders in the Australian league”, she explained her motivation behind her drive and killer defense on the court.
Latanya also spoke about her experience heading to South Africa for the 2023 Netball World Cup.
The Netball superstar had 30 intercepts, 70 deflections, and 4 rebounds all in 16 games last season and she spoke about staying confident in the game.
