Health Ministry reports 5 additional Covid-19 related deaths, as WHO expresses concern about growing number of global Covid deaths

The Health Ministry is reporting 5 additional Covid-19 related deaths, pushing the death toll to 2,755.

The deaths occurred in January and February this year.

The deceased are 2 females and 3 males, ages 66 to 85 years.

They lived in St. Elizabeth.

6 other deaths are under investigation.

Meantime, 61 new cases have been recorded, pushing the case count to 127,294.

Of the new cases 33 are females and 28 are males.

They range in age from 1 year to 90 years.

St. Catherine recorded the highest number of cases with 18.

The positivity rate is 12.7 per cent.

And hospitalisations have dropped below 300.

The ministry says 296 persons are in hospital.

Among them are 38 are severely ill, 9 are critically ill and 64 are moderately ill.

184 more persons have recovered.

Meantime, the World Health Organisation, WHO is expressing concern about the growing number of Covid-19 related deaths globally.

The WHO says Covid deaths have been increasing for the last 6 weeks. 

Covid-19 Technical Lead at the WHO, Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove says the deaths are being driven by the Omicron variant.
