The Health Ministry says its import permit department, is monitoring all donations and personal imports, following reports that over four medicines may have resulted in the deaths of 66 children in The Gambia.

On Wednesday, the World Health Organization, WHO said a product alert was issued for over four cough and cold syrups, made by maiden pharmaceuticals in India, following the suspected deaths.

The products are Promethazine Oral Solution, Kofex-malin Baby Cough Syrup, Makoff Baby Cough Syrup and Magrip N Cold Syrup.

According to Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton, records indicate that neither the manufacturer nor the product is registered with the ministry, and therefore the possibility of the product entering Jamaica is remote.

He noted however, that the ministry has put in place measures to further reduce the risk of the product entering the country.
