The government has stated that the recent highway toll rate increases are legally mandated under long-term agreements signed by a previous administration.
These binding contracts dictate that toll rates must be adjusted annually based on the US Consumer Price Index and the Jamaican to US exchange rate.
While obligated to honor these terms, Transport Minister Daryl Vaz announced that the government is seeking discussions with the private operators to explore more affordable options for motorists.
According to the administration, officials successfully negotiated lower price caps and an improved revenue-sharing model for the May Pen to Williamsfield segment to protect the public from high costs on newer infrastructure.
