Transport Minister Daryl Vaz says it will take up to 400 buses and approximately 3 years, to fully roll out a national rural school bus system, designed to serve 850 rural schools.

The first phase of the program set to begin this September, involves the deployment of 100 buses to service about 258 schools and over 300 thousand students in rural areas.

Speaking yesterday (Thurs) at the arrival of 63 new Compressed Natural Gas CNG buses for the Jamaica Urban Transit Company JUTC, Mr. Vaz expressed confidence in completing the program within three years.

The Minister also reiterated that the fare is a flat rate of 50 dollars per trip, using a cash-less system, similar to the subsidised fare model used in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region.
