According to Hon. Pearnel Charles Jr., Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, Jamaica’s food security is a top priority for the government.
Minister Charles Jr. stated that there is a global demand for Jamaican produce and that the government is working to increase local production of several crops, particularly onions.
He stated that the Ministry has set a goal of increasing onion production from 20% to 70% in order to meet local demand.
Mr. Charles Jr. urged all Jamaicans to take advantage of emerging opportunities in agriculture, noting that agriculture is a critical component of the country’s economic recovery.
