Yet another effluent spill from the holding pond at Ewarton in St. Catherine has resulted in a fish kill, upsetting residents.

Bauxite company UC Rusal has explained that heavy and continuous rainfall yesterday, caused the pond to overflow, spilling effluent from the pond into the Old John Gully.

As a result, waterways in the vicinity of Byndloss, Vanity Fair, Charlemont Foot Bridge, as well as the Rio Cobre, have been affected.

The company, through its environmental management program, has increased routine monitoring.

It said efforts are being made to maximize the return of effluent to the plant, to curtail the spill from the holding pond and to prevent the contamination of other areas.
