American rapper Eminem’s mother has passed.
Debbie Nelson passed away yesterday (December 2) in St. Joseph, Missouri. She was 69 years old and had been terminally ill for some time.
Nelson’s terminal lung cancer diagnosis became public in September, and reports indicated that while Eminem had been financially supporting her, they were still estranged for years.
Prior to her lung cancer diagnosis, Debbie overcame breast cancer and expressed her concerns about hereditary health issues affecting her family.
Eminem and Debbie had a turbulent relationship, and this was often portrayed in Em’s music.
In 2000, she sued him for defamation over claims in his song “My Name Is,” seeking $10 million but only receiving $25,000 in a settlement. Despite their struggles, Eminem extended forgiveness in his 2013 track “Headlights,” where he acknowledged her efforts in raising him and his brother.
Their relationship saw a positive turn in recent years. In 2022, after Eminem’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Debbie shared a heartfelt video congratulating him and expressing pride in him and her granddaughter, Hailie Jade.
