'Never let them know your next move’ seems to be Canadian rapper Drake’s motto for the start of the year.
The “Marvin’s Room” rapper is suing Universal Music Group (UMG) for defamation and harassment over Kendrick Lamar’s hit song, “Not Like Us.”
In a lawsuit filed this morning (January 15), Drizzy accuses UMG of creating and promoting the song, which falsely labels him as a paedophile and incites violence against him.
Drake claims that UMG’s motive was financial and out of greed, aiming to profit from Not Like Us’s success while trying to tarnish his brand to gain leverage in renegotiating his contract.
Just yesterday, Drake withdrew his initial pre-action petition against UMG, which led several persons to believe that he was backing out of the legal battle.
Drizzy emphasised that the legal actions were not aimed at K.Dot but solely at UMG.
In November, Drake alleged UMG and Spotify used bots and payola to promote Not Like Us. UMG and Spotify have denied any wrongdoing, with a related Texas case hearing scheduled for January 28.
