The Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC, Chappelle’s alma mater, is paying tribute to the comedian by renaming a building in his honour.
This comes months after he got heckled on campus by students who felt his jokes about the transgender community were out of line. Back in October Dave’s Netflix special, ‘The Closer’ premiered on the streaming platform and critics felt his witty remarks about trans people had taken his comedic jokes too far.
The aforementioned school had originally planned to formally bestow the honour in late 2021, but as the scandal surrounding the Netflix special continued, the decision was made to wait until it had blown over.
The unveiling and dedication ceremony is set to happen today June 20.
