Dancehall Star Squash Facing Serious U.S. Charges

Share

Jamaican dancehall artiste Squash, born Andrae Maurice Whittaker, is in major legal trouble in the U.S. after being accused of leading a violent gang that stretches from Jamaica to Florida.
The "Big Breeze" singer was arrested on February 24 during a traffic stop in Miami. Where police reportedly found a modified Glock pistol in the car’s glove compartment.
The thirty-two-year-old has been charged with illegal gun possession and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit.
Squash has pleaded not guilty.
Last month (May) Whittaker's case took a turn when U.S. federal officials got involved. The officials claim that Squash is the head of the G-City Gang, which started in St. James, Jamaica, and later migrated to Florida.
The artiste is also accused of entering the U.S. illegally in 2021 after fleeing Jamaica during a gang conflict. Though he was detained by immigration, he was later released after marrying a U.S. citizen, who happens to be the same woman who allegedly bought one of the guns now tied to his case.
If convicted, Squash could face up to 10 years in prison for each charge, and possibly more if he has past convictions as well as deportation.
He is currently in federal custody in Miami. His trial is set for September 2, and he has until August 26 to accept a plea deal.
