Cuba Hit by Nationwide Blackout Amid Deepening Energy Crisis and Failing Power Grid

Share

Cuba experienced a nationwide blackout Monday, affecting about 11 million people as the country’s worsening energy crisis and aging power grid continue to cause major failures.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines said the electrical system suffered a “complete disconnection,” though the units operating at the time did not fail. It is the third major blackout in four months.

Experts say Cuba’s power infrastructure is far past its useful life and has not been properly maintained, leading to frequent outages.

The government has partly blamed U.S. energy sanctions and a lack of oil shipments, with President Miguel Díaz-Canel saying the island has not received oil in three months.

Analysts warn that without major energy support or expansion of renewable power, Cuba could face prolonged hardship, economic collapse, and possible mass migration.
