California AG Rob Bonta Plans Lawsuit Against Chrome Holding Over 23andMe Data Breach

California Attorney General Rob Bonta says he plans to sue Chrome Holding over allegations that its predecessor, 23andMe, failed to protect customer genetic data.

The lawsuit follows a 2023 data breach that exposed sensitive information of nearly seven million users, including ancestry, ethnicity, and genetic risk details.

Bonta also alleged the company misled consumers about the severity of the breach, while hackers reportedly targeted data linked to Asian American Pacific Islander and Jewish users.

The company has faced international scrutiny since the breach, including a £2.31 million fine from the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office.
