The Nigerian rapper and singer, Burna Boy, has had a long week filled with negative feedback from fans, which appears to be culminating in the cancellation of at least two stops of his No Sign of Weakness (NSOW) tour.
The drama started at his Red Rocks Amphitheatre show on November 12, where the Nigerian afrobeats star abruptly halted his set after spotting a front-row woman nodding off. Burna Boy pointed out the couple, saying, “When I stand up here and see you with your girl sleeping… it pissed me off.” He then told the man he wouldn’t perform another song until they left, prompting security to escort them out.
Instead of calming the public backlash that ensued, during a recent livestream, he shrugged off the criticism, joking, “Did I ask you all to be my fans? I’m only looking for fans with money these days.”
Since then, the woman at the centre of the incident, Chaltu Jateny, has come forward, saying she’d been emotionally and physically drained after the death of her daughter’s father. She explained she attended the concert hoping for a moment of joy, but exhaustion overtook her. Jateny called the public embarrassment “humiliating,” reminding fans that you never know the battles someone else is fighting.
Further to this situation, social media has erupted in rumours of the tour being reportedly cancelled, with some users posting screenshots of their ticketing systems reporting “unfortunately, the event organizer has cancelled your event”. These reports have yet to be confirmed by Burna Boy.
Following the social media speculation, fans are calling on the ‘Last Last’ singer to apologize to fans and the concert goer, with one commenting. “A simple yet meaningful apology would have solved this…but ego and pride said No”.
