Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel will be officially crowned the "King of Dancehall" at Reggae Sumfest 2025 on July 18 at the Catherine Hall Entertainment Centre in Montego Bay, St James.
The title, previously held by Beenie Man since 2009, was agreed upon, following reported discussions between Kartel and Joe Bogdanovich, CEO of Downsound Entertainment and Sumfest promoter.
The decision comes amidst debate in the dancehall community, especially following Kartel’s standout performance at his Freedom Street Concert in December 2024. His coronation highlights a major career milestone and further cements his influence in the genre.
Night One of the festival will feature top dancehall acts like Tommy Lee Sparta, Masicka, Skeng, Shaneil Muir, Govana, and D’Yani, and is part of a week-long celebration from July 13 to 19.
The 34th edition of Reggae Sumfest is expected to be historic, with strong international interest and high ticket sales, especially for Night Two on July 19.
Bogdanovich praised Kartel as a transformative force in dancehall, especially among fans aged 18 to 35, and promised a “bigger and better” production this year.
