Fans and critics were surprised at the news that the infamous character of Severus Snape, described in the books as having pale, pasty skin and played by the white actor, the late Alan Rickman, has been race-swapped to be played by Black British actor Paapa Essiedu. This isn't the first time a Harry Potter character has been race-swapped to criticism from fans, as in 2016, the stage play sequel to the Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, featured Hermione Granger played by Black actress Noma Dumezweni.
The others filled roles so far include Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore, teacher Minerva McGonagall, groundskeeper Hagrid and first book antagonist Quirrell. Yet to be announced are the golden trio, Ron, Hermione and the titular Harry Potter.
