Google Translate Now Supports Jamaican Patois

Share

Jamaican Patois has reached a new milestone in global recognition with its inclusion as a supported language on Google Translate.

This marks a significant step in both language accessibility and cultural preservation.

As part of Google’s expansion, which introduces over 100 new languages, this addition underscores the growing influence of Jamaican speech and the importance of documenting it.

For years, Patois has faced stigma, often dismissed as an informal dialect rather than a structured language.

However, media personality and children’s book author AmaShika Lorne, a longtime advocate for greater recognition of the language, in welcoming the move, sees this as a transformative moment.

She also highlights that Google’s decision reflects the global reach of Jamaicans, both at home and throughout the Diaspora.
