New York-based soca artiste, Yankey Boy has started a hunger strike to protest against dancehall megastar Vybz Kartel’s Trinidad performance for the upcoming Carnival.

Promoters of the Caribbean Music Festival recently announced that Vybz Kartel will perform on Carnival Friday, February 28. Though details have not been disclosed, the news didn’t sit well with Yankey Boy. In response, he took to social media to express his outrage.

In an Instagram post, the "Eye Get Big" singer shared a striking image of himself with his mouth taped shut, holding a cardboard sign that read, "Since Vybz Kartel is set to perform Carnival Friday, Feb. 28," while the back of the sign stated, "Yankey Boy, Hunger Strike Day #1. Until he changes the date—Ash Wednesday Open! Carnival is supposed to be only Soca, Calypso, Chutney, Steelpan, and Tasso."

The post quickly gained attention, with some followers showing support for his cause, while others pointed out the contradiction, reminding him that Vybz Karle has collaborated with soca artists in the past. Many used Machel Montano's "Super Soca" as an example.
