Jamaica & US Partner To Catch Debtors Who Migrate Owing Student Loans

Share

Jamaicans who have migrated to the United States with unpaid student loans may encounter serious hurdles when attempting to update or renew their immigration status.

Cheryl Surjue, Manager of the Loan Servicing Department at Jamaica’s Students’ Loan Bureau (SLB), explained that the Government of Jamaica has partnered with US authorities to track down Jamaicans with outstanding student loan balances.

Surjue highlighted that professionals across various fields have left Jamaica without settling their student debts, making it challenging for the SLB to monitor their locations, which often leads to loan defaults.

This collaboration aims to identify individuals with outstanding loan balances before any changes are made to their immigration status, potentially affecting their ability to remain in the United States legally if they are found to be delinquent on their loans.
