Jamaica’s female sprinting dominance rose to the top on the world stage once again as Defending Champion Elaine Thompson, Herah struck gold in the Women’s 100 meters final to lead home a Jamaican sweep at the Tokyo Olympics.
Thompson Herah who battled injuries over the last two years clocked a new Olympic and Jamaica record of 10.61 seconds to storm home to victory ahead of two times gold medallist Shelly-ann Fraser Pryce who clocked 10.74 seconds and Sherika Jackson 10.76 seconds.
Fraser-Pryce got the better start but Thompson-Herah, took charge at the halfway stage before pulling away then celebrating with a left hand salute and pointing to the clock as she crossed the line.
Thompson-Herah in the process smashed the Olympic record of 10.62 seconds, thirty two years ago in Seoul, and Fraser-Pryce’s previous national mark and world leading 10.63 seconds.
Jackson, who was a 400 meters bronze medalist five years ago in Rio now joins Veronica Campbell Brown in fifth place on the all time 100 meters Jamaican list.
All three women will now turn their attention to the 200 meters event.
