Despite the current political turmoil in Haiti, following the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, the elections will go ahead later this year, as planned.

Speaking in the Senate today, Foreign Affairs Minister Kamina Johnson Smith noted that the confirmation regarding the polls was given by Haiti’s interim Prime Minister.

For the past year and a half, Haiti has been in a state of unrest with many citizens questioning the legitimacy of the President, amidst claims that he had overstayed his term in office.

Mrs. Johnson Smith said Jamaica will be monitoring the developments surrounding Haiti’s electoral process.
