Concerns about the safety of schools on the island have resurfaced following two incidents at educational institutions in Clarendon and St. Andrew on Monday.
In the most recent event at Rousseau Primary School in St. Andrew, a man was fatally shot; his identity has not been disclosed, but reports indicate he was a parent of a student at the school.
Earlier that day, at Knox College in Clarendon, a grade 11 student was stabbed by another student during an altercation, resulting in the injured student being hospitalized.
This stabbing incident comes after two similar violent occurrences in Trelawny and Manchester the previous week.
Dr. Mark Smith, President of the Jamaica Teacher's Association (JTA), expressed that Jamaica is on a precarious path regarding school violence, attributing part of the problem to domestic violence.
Dr. Smith said its important that citizens learn how to deal with disputes. He said everyone must play their part in addressing the issue.
