Wake the town and tell the people singer and vocalist, Daddy U-Roy whose real name was Ewart Beckford (OD), died at the age of 78.
U-Roy, who had been ailing for some time, died last night in Jamaica after undisclosed illness. Tributes poured in on social media as artists, musicians, and fans empathize at the death of a pioneering godfather of the Jamaican musician.
Bob Andy, David Rodigan, Charley Blacks, Spice and Mr. Boombastik Shaggy wrote on his instagram “Today we lost one of our heroes! A true legend in this game of dance hall/ Reggae if your (sic) a fan of sound system, then your a fan of Stur Gav sound. U Roy was a master at his craft. Rest Well daddy Roy!! R.I.P. walk good.”
