Efforts underway to get legal representation for 20 Haitians who landed in Portland

Human rights advocate Malene Alleyne says she has begun the process to seek legal representation for the 20 Haitians who landed in Portland on Saturday.

A baby and three women are reportedly among the group.

Ms. Alleyne says that while she has faced some challenges in speaking with the Haitians, she visited the Port Antonio police station where they are being held.

She states that though she is not representing them, she is advocating for them to have legal representation, which she and others are ready to offer.

Noting the turmoil in Haiti, she is hoping that their case will go before the court.

The latest arrival comes months after another group of 35 Haitian nationals showed up at a beach in Kensington, Portland, on July 28.

They were sent back to their homeland less than 24 hours after they arrived.

Haiti has been facing political instability and civil unrest for several months, prompting many Haitians to flee their homeland.
