American actor Jaleel White, best known for his role as “Steve Urkel” on Family Matters, recently shared that playing the iconic character had lasting effects on his voice.
During an appearance at 90s Con 2024 in Daytona Beach over the weekend, White explained how the high-pitched, nasal tone he used for Urkel caused significant strain.
The Family Matters star explained that had his pitch been “going all over the place," he wouldn’t have damaged it as much. However, it is now in remission, and he is “fine” now.
White reflected on the fear he experienced during filming, recalling moments when he felt he was losing his voice, and crew members often struggled to hear him.
He also revealed that he didn’t have a vocal coach then, which left him unaware of how to protect his voice from strain.
