Government Senator Matthew Samuda is describing the ban on single use plastic bags as a success.

The ban which took effect on January 1, prohibits the importation and manufacture of some plastic items, including straws and single use plastic bags or scandal bags.

Mr. Samuda says such a policy puts Jamaica on the forefront with regards to good environmental practices.

Meanwhile, the senator said the deposit refund scheme for PET and other plastic bottles will come on stream this year, following negotiations between the government and producers of plastic bottles.

Under the scheme, persons will be able to turn in their plastic bottles in exchange for cash.
