A street and a sports venue will be named in honour of slain Ugandan Olympic athlete Rebecca Cheptegei.

The announcement preceded the funeral held earlier today, in Eastern Ughanda, where thousands of mourners were in attendance.

Cheptegei, who represented Uganda at Paris Olympics, where she finished 54th in the women's marathon, passed away on Monday, after succumbing to injuries, after she was doused in petrol and set on fire, by her former boyfriend, who has since died from burns, sustained in the attack.

Senior BBC Africa correspondent Anne Soy, was among those who attended the ceremony that was held in Cheptegei's home district.
