The parliamentary opposition is standing by its decision not to allow continuation of the states of emergency despite poll findings that indicate most Jamaicans are in favour of the crime-fighting measure.

The poll, conducted island-wide from February 15 to March 3, found that 90 percent of Jamaicans supported the states of emergency and 78 percent wanted them to be extended.

Opposition Spokesman on National Security Fitz Jackson says he understood the support for states of emergency given the high crime rate but maintained that this was not the answer to the problem, since a state of emergency, cannot and ought not to be a crime-fighting tool.
