The Jamaican singer, songwriter and record producer passed away at 87.

In a statement, Culture and Entertainment Minster Olivia Grange calls him a true pioneer of Jamaican music.

From The Jiving Juniors to his Crystal label, Derrick helped shape Ska, Rocksteady and early Reggae. Hits such as “The Loser,” “I Care” and “Born to Love You” remain classics, while his productions for artistes such as Dennis Brown helped define an era.

The Minister noted that "Through his music and his record store, he nurtured talent and helped preserve our rich musical heritage.

The Minister further extended heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and the entire music fraternity.

Meanwhile, Opposition leader Mark Golding echoes similar sentiments, calling Harriot a true pioneer of Jamaican music. He says "Though his major influence was as a producer, generating numerous hits that remain household favourites, he also made his mark as a singer with lasting hits."

Golding said he's "truly saddened to learn of Harriot's passing".
