The annual Reggae Month celebrations begin today (Fri) with a street party in downtown Kingston.

The party, which will take place on Orange Street, is being staged as a tribute to the late “Crown Prince of Reggae” Dennis Brown, who would have been 62 today.

Later in the month there will be a Dennis Brown Tribute Concert at the Waterfront in downtown, Kingston.

The street party in tribute to Brown will begin at 8:00pm. It is one of two key activities on the opening day of Reggae Month.

The other is the first in a series street dances dubbed ‘Reggae in the Park’ which will take place every Friday in the Linstead town square, St Catherine starting at midday.

‘Reggae in the Park’ dances will also take place on Wednesdays at Island Village in Ocho Rios, St Ann.

Other activities for Reggae Month include a church service on February 3; the showing of a series of reggae films at Emancipation Park; a reggae music exhibition at the African Caribbean Institute, which will run for the entire month; concerts; the Global Reggae Conference; and nightly entertainment events across the country.

Reggae Month, celebrated annually in February, is being organized jointly by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport and the Ministry of Tourism.

It is being celebrated under the theme ‘Celebrating Reggae’s Legacy’.
