OutKast is taking a rapper to court… over their name.
The duo’s company, High Schoolers LLC, has filed a federal lawsuit in Georgia against Oakland rapper and producer Silas Wilson, who performs as Ovrkast.
The lawsuit claims Wilson is infringing on OutKast’s trademark rights and also broke a previous settlement agreement requiring him to stop using the name by July 15.
According to the complaint, Wilson had agreed to switch his stage name to Overkxst, but the paperwork was never completed. His team reportedly suggested two other names that had already been rejected, and after a final deadline passed on August 11, the company says he continued releasing music as Ovrkast.
Wilson has built a name for himself as both an artist and producer, with credits on Drake’s “Make Them Pay” from Iceman, as well as “Red Button” and “The Shoe Fits” from For All the Dogs.
