RNB, soul artiste India.Arie, who found fame in the 2000s with empowerment hits like Video and Brown Skin, is weighing in on one of the summer’s biggest viral songs, saying Yung Miami’s Spend Dat sends the wrong message.
The four-time Grammy winner responded to a social media post criticizing the track, saying everything people consume — from music to food — has an influence, and urging listeners to “make wise choices.”
The comments come as Spend Dat continues climbing the charts, recently reaching the Billboard Hot 100's Top 25.
Arie shared: “I’m calling a boycott of Yung Miami’s song “Spend Dat, I believe it’s degrading to our culture...I spent my entire adult life caring way too much because I finally learned that not everybody cares (with a capital C). And explaining it to them is not going to make them care. Everything you listen to or eat is going to influence you. So, make wise choices, y'all,”
She says her focus is on encouraging people to think critically about the media they consume and choose what aligns with their own values.
The conversation has since sparked debate online over artistic expression, personal responsibility and music’s influence on culture.
