Opposition MP Damion Crawford is urging the Government to introduce a special minimum wage for tourism sector workers, arguing that their working conditions are more demanding than those in other industries.
Speaking in the House of Representatives, he said tourism employees face unpredictable hours, safety risks, and significant emotional labour that should be reflected in their pay.
Mr. Crawford added that workers often have to maintain a high level of customer service even under difficult personal circumstances.
The proposal comes as Parliament debates amendments to the national minimum wage orders.
