Senate Approves Amendments to Jamaica’s Milk Laws Allowing Lower Milk Solid Standards

Share

The Senate on Friday passed amendments to Jamaica’s milk industry laws, including a change that could allow products with as little as five per cent milk solids to qualify as dairy items.

Government Senator Aubyn Hill said the reform is meant to modernise the sector and tighten regulation, while Opposition senators warned it could weaken food standards and hurt local farmers.

The Senate also approved changes to conch export levies, giving exporters more time and flexibility to pay fees during disruptions like bad weather or trade shocks.

The bills were passed without amendment despite debate over dairy standards, overfishing, and enforcement in Jamaica’s fishing industry.
