Amidst passionate debates stemming from the criticism of the Hill and Gully riddim by veteran broadcaster and cultural expert Fae Ellington, dancehall producer Di Genius took to his Instagram stories to warn fans via a reshared tweet, "Please don't be disrespectful towards Fae Ellington".
On Sunday, Jamaican social media reeled after Ellington shared candid thoughts on the riddim behind recent hit Slip and Slide by Masicka, saying "When I hear persons changing the lyrics of Hill an’ Gully Rider to vulgarity, it pains me, it hits me in a place I cannot explain, I get numb... Unuh supposed to know better...Hill an’ Gully Rider, Emmanuel Road? Unuh understand unuh heritage?".
Since then, fans and critics of the riddim have been locked in debate over whether the song's resurgence, via its recent dancehall reincarnation, is helping the culture or besmirching it. Di Genius’s post seems to endorse the sentiment that Ellington should remain respected despite the ongoing discourse.
