Dancehall artiste Ayetian becomes one of the latest artistes to be confirmed to voice a song on the fast-rising Hill and Gully riddim by celebrity producer Di Genius. Amidst the first teasers of his song Donkey Call released, the artiste took to his Instagram stories to clarify that he's "not trying to satisfy anybody or find a hit song" with the release, rather "just trying to bring the culture back".
A previous story post read "Its ok if you don't understand the lyrics. Go and listen [my] other songs" further solidifying his cultural mission. Despite his sentiments, the teaser to Donkey Call, which came in the form of a clip from the song's music video posted to Instagram was met positively by fans with comments that read "Between this and masicka Slip and Slide, dancehall is going back to its roots...big up genius", "What dancehall needs fr Bring back the fun. Bring back energy. Live up the culture." and "we needed this ayetian...he so fulla culture".
Since Di Genius released the Hill and Gully riddim last week with the lead song Slip and Slide by Masicka, fans of dancehall music have praised the cultural sound and its sampling of the 1980's mento classic of the same name. Officially, Masicka's Slip and Slide, Valiant's Woii and Elephant Man's Hol Him Gyal are the first out the gate with Govana's Itsy Bitsy, Ayetian's Donkey Call and an unnamed track by Nigey Boy are incoming. Di Genius took to social media today to acknowledge all the artistes dropping songs on the riddim and calling for him to 'authorize' them, explaining that while he enjoys some of them, he wanted to respect the work of the artistes he officially voiced by releasing their work first.
