American singer Mariah Carey is grieving the devastating loss of both her mother and sister.
Yesterday (August 26), the "Without You" singer confirmed the heartbreaking news to People magazine.
In her statement, Carey said, “My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Tragically, on the same day, my sister also passed away. I feel blessed to have spent the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love, support, and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
The cause of death for Carey’s mother, Patricia, a former opera singer and vocal coach, has not yet been revealed. Patricia was 87 years old. Meanwhile, it is reported that Carey’s sister, Alison, was receiving care at a hospice for an undisclosed illness.
Carey’s relationship with both her mother and sister was strained, as she revealed in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey. Alison later sued Mariah for $1.2 million due to comments made in the book, but Carey never responded, and it remains unclear whether the legal dispute was ever settled.
In her memoir, Carey noted that although her mother encouraged her singing, she believed there was underlying jealousy. Despite their complicated relationship, Carey dedicated her memoir to Patricia, and the two occasionally performed together during Carey’s musical career.
