Internationally acclaimed electronic dance music outfit Major Lazer has thrown its support behind Jamaica’s Winter Olympic campaign, making a significant financial contribution to the national bobsleigh team, as competition gets underway at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan.

The group made the donation on Friday to the “Help Jamaica Bobsleigh Achieve Olympic Dreams” GoFundMe initiative, which is being organised by the North Country Sports Council NCSC, a United States-based non-profit organisation.

The fundraising campaign, launched late last year, began attracting donor support approximately one month ago. Major Lazer’s contribution stands as the largest single donation to date.

Jamaica’s bobsleigh programme gained international recognition following its historic Olympic debut in 1988, an achievement later immortalised in the 1993 feature film Cool Runnings, which was inspired by the team’s journey.

Bobsleigh competition at the Winter Games commenced on Thursday with official training sessions and is scheduled to continue through February 22.

Major Lazer’s current line-up comprises Diplo, Walshy Fire, Ape Drums, and new member America Foster. Foster is British-Jamaican, while Walshy Fire, who was raised in Florida, is of Chinese-Jamaican heritage.
