Hailey Bieber has sent a cease-and-desist letter to TikToker Julie Theis, who recently went viral with a video speaking about women in "tolerant codependent" relationships, naming Hailey and Justin Beiber, who have been married for 6 years, as an example.
"Tolerant Codependent describes relationships where the woman "tolerates mediocrity, abuse, doing the majority of domestic and emotional labor."
Beiber's cease and desist letter, obtained by US celebrity news outlet TMZ, reads that the TikTok creator has "manufactured a false defamatory narrative" saying Theis' conduct is wrongful, highly damaging, actionable, and exposes you to substantial liability", claiming she has made "outrageous false, fabricated, and defamatory statements".
The TikTok creator has since responded publicly to the letter, expressing that Hailey and Justin Bieber are coming after her right to free speech, saying "It's extremely elitist to try to silence opinions just because you disagree. Disagreement is not defamation."
While the internet remains polarised, RNB singer SZA has jumped to the Beibers' defense in the video's comments, asking the creator "are you a licensed therapist or psychologist? You speak with SUCH certainty and Id like to know . Peace”.
SZA went on to say that “publicly diagnosing people you have absolutely no contact with and presenting that information as fact under the premise of education.. may be a bit dangerous? For all parties, including those you wish to educate, just an opinion! All respect to you.”
Theis responded to SZA, explaining that she has “bachelor’s and masters degree in psychology” and has also “worked as a behavioural specialist and researcher.”
