Preparations for The Ministry of Entertainment and Culture-backed I Love Jamaica Telethon and Virtual Concert are well underway ahead of Sunday and Jamaican stars based both locally and internationally are amping up the promo.
The relief funding efforts were announced by Minister of Entertainment, Culture, Gender and Sport Olivia Babsy Grange shortly after plans of Jamaica's post-Melissa recovery plans were announced by the government, to be held alongside the Jamaica Strong Benefit concert series across major cities across the diaspora.
The event, to be televised live on major television broadcasters and online on Facebook will be held on November 23 from 1PM to 7PM. The event is set to feature stars across the entertainment fraternity such as Tarrus Riley, DAngel, Ding Dong, Alaine, Tanya Stephens, Tommy Lee plus more and headlined by Tessanne Chin, Christopher Martin and Kevin Downswell.
Speaking on the event at a launch held at her ministry's head offices on November 6, Minister Grange shared: “The need is great, and we must answer the call to show care, compassion and love by using our gifts and talents to make a difference in the lives of those Jamaicans who have been worst affected by hurricane Melissa...we have mobilised the men and women of our creative and sports sectors towards the national hurricane relief effort. We intend to leverage the power of the creative and sports sectors to source the necessary resources to assist our brothers and sisters, particularly those in the western parishes.”
Sports icons such as Usain Bolt, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, and Asafa Powell are expected to be part of the Telethon, even answering phones as donations and pledges come in.
