US-based producer and 1/4 of the global EDM music group Major Lazer, Diplo, is speaking out about the effects of the recent category 5 hurricane Melissa on Jamaica, an island he describes as "the heart of everything for me".
In a post to his Instagram yesterday, Diplo expressed horror at the damages the hurricane brought to Jamaica's western region and pledged personal donations to American Friends of Jamaica and other smaller relief funds to aid the island's recovery.
He wrote: Jamaica has been at the heart of everything for me. I've been going there for more than 20 years - It's where so much of my story and Major Lazer's story began...Seeing the destruction this week has been horrible...If Jamaica has ever given you a song, a memory or even just good energy. I hope you'll join me in Giving back."
The American producer famously owns a 64-acre property in Portland called Pompeii that boasts a gym, a recording studio, library, and a wellness area with a sauna. Pompeii was covered last year by US-based architecture magazine Architectural Digest for their popular web series "Open Door with AD", where celebrities from across the world invite the platform into their space for a tour. The video was met with polarizing opinions from Jamaicans across the Diaspora.
