History is repeating itself as rumblings of the supposed Rapture happening on Sept. 23 are taking over the internet, ranging from fervent belief to healthy skepticism.
It all began with video clip of A South African pastor named Joshua Mhlakela claiming to have visualized Jesus returning on Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, celebrated this Monday through Wednesday.
The clip made its way across social media platforms with many users on TikTok sharing reactions. Some users took the pastor’s words seriously and according to US media, a person sold their car while others quit their jobs, relating to Mhlakela’s word.
Others pulled out the cameras to make comical content regarding the looming doomsday. “RaptureTok” quickly became a meme, with users making parody-style clips discussing religion, practitioners of the Christian faith who believe the end is near, and additional content surrounding the trending topic.
