Kirk Franklin Speaks on Marriage and His Relationship with His Mom

American gospel artist Kirk Franklin believes that marriage has been weaponized in Western Christianity.

Videos of his sit-down interview with Cam Newton on the show Funky Friday have been going viral.

The “I Smile” singer stated that many Christians view marriage as a solution to sin, a notion with which he strongly disagrees.

There’s this notion that if you’re living in sin, you need to get married, without understanding that marriage doesn’t fix sin,” the 54-year-old said.

Franklin also spoke about the pressure that Black women over 35 face within their church communities, noting that being single and childless is often seen as a flaw.

He added, “People rush into marriage thinking they’re fulfilling God’s will, but they’re really just following man’s dogma. You can be single and still be used by God. Being married is not a prerequisite for God’s hand on your life, but we’ve weaponized it."

During the interview, Franklin also revealed that he no longer speaks to his mother. The reason? He explained that she brought her new husband into his life while the family was trying to rehabilitate his sister, who had just been released from prison.
