The estimated value of property lost due to fires in Jamaica during 2024 exceeded $9 billion, maintaining a similar level to losses recorded in 2023. This figure represents approximately 3% of the total estimated value of property at risk, which stood at $274.6 billion.
The data comes from the 2024 edition of the Economic and Social Survey Jamaica, published by the Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ).
Despite the high value of losses, the Jamaica Fire Brigade responded to fewer genuine fire calls in 2024 — a total of 9,775 incidents, marking a 14.2% decrease compared to 2023.
The report underscores the persistent economic impact of fire-related incidents, even as call volumes decline, highlighting the need for continued investment in fire prevention and safety measures.
