A nine year old girl has died after being struck by a garbage truck near her home in Bonitto Heights, Mandeville, Manchester, earlier this morning.
The victim, Amara Moore, was a Grade 4 student at Villa Road Primary School.
According to reports, around 7:00am, Amara was walking down a hill, when an object fell from a garbage truck collecting waste in the area, striking her. Police say she subsequently fell, and the truck ran over her.
Villa Road Primary School Principal Brent James described the tragedy as deeply saddening for the school community.
Meanwhile, State Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Manchester Central, Rhoda Moy-Crawford, confirmed that grief counselling support is being offered to students and staff affected by the incident.
The National Solid Waste Management Authority NSWMA expressed profound sadness over the incident. In a statement this morning, the NSWMA extended condolences to Amara’s family and loved ones.
