In light of the Tropical Storm watch implemented in Jamaica by the nation’s disaster preparedness authorities, the government has placed its national shelter network on high alert as the island braces for possible impacts from Tropical Storm Melissa.
A total of 881 emergency shelters across the country are being prepared for activation if necessary, with Shelter Managers already on standby to receive persons who may need to evacuate.
Minister of Water, Environment and Climate Change, Hon. Matthew Samuda confirmed that the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and Local Authorities have activated their preparedness measures.
