Authorities in Portland are still searching for several Haitians believed to have entered Jamaica illegally, after a boat landed in Kensington yesterday.
According to reports, the group is thought to include more than 20 people. Head of the Portland Police, Superintendent Ainsley McCarthy, confirmed that 21 Haitians have so far been taken into custody. He added that the search continued late into the night to locate any others who may have been aboard the vessel.
Superintendent McCarthy said the police received a call around 11:00 a.m. yesterday alerting them to the boat’s arrival. He noted that additional government agencies are expected to assist today, with processing the detainees.
This latest incident comes just months after a similar landing in May, when more than 40 Haitians arrived on a beach in Long Bay, also in Portland.
