The 2025 Oscars were a night full of surprises and memorable moments.
The 97th Academy Awards ceremony, which took place last night (March 2) at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood, opened with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo paying tribute to The Wizard of Oz with a stunning performance of iconic songs from the franchise.
While the ceremony featured exciting moments, there were technical issues with Hulu’s live stream, especially during the Best Actress announcement, and controversy surrounding the "In Memoriam" segment. The Oscars left out Michelle Trachtenberg during the tribute, and fans were NOT having it!
Host Conan O’Brien provided a mix of humour and thoughtful commentary, and Kieran Culkin’s emotional acceptance speech was the highlight of the night. Several other beloved figures in the film industry were also left out, sparking debate among viewers and industry professionals alike.
Despite some glitches and criticism of streaming services, the 2025 Oscars celebrated both the artistry and craftsmanship of filmmaking, with Anora emerging as the night’s big winner.
Major Highlights:
Best Picture & Best Director: Anora dominated the evening, taking home five Oscars, including the prestigious Best Picture and Best Director for Sean Baker. The film, a bold exploration of family dynamics and societal struggles, made history as it swept the major categories.
Best Actress: Mikey Madison's unexpected victory for Anora was one of the evening's most emotional moments.
Best Actor: Adrien Brody won Best Actor for his powerful performance in The Brutalist.
Best Supporting Actor & Actress: Kieran Culkin won Best Supporting Actor for his role in A Real Pain while Zoe Saldaña earned Best Supporting Actress for her transformative role in Emilia Pérez.
